‘Up Against It’ Review: Antonio Banderas Stars in a British Family Dramedy That Ignores Its Own Conundrums
A crisscrossing family dramedy, Trudie Styler’s “Up Against It” features wonderful performances and intriguingly modern ideas, but it seldom coheres as comedy or drama. A tale of divorced parents, their respective partners and their ailing, precocious teen, this occasionally effe
The latest offering from director Trudie Styler, "Up Against It", has landed with a thud, despite boasting a talented cast, including the charismatic Antonio Banderas. The film's meandering narrative, which attempts to balance comedy and drama, fails to fully cohere, leaving viewers scratching their heads. This is a shame, as the movie's exploration of modern family dynamics and its tackling of weighty themes, such as ailing teenagers and blended families, had all the makings of a resonant and engaging story.
The film's inability to find its tone is a major stumbling block, veering wildly between slapstick humor and mawkish sentimentality. Styler's direction, while occasionally effective in capturing the complexities of family relationships, often prioritizes style over substance, resulting in a narrative that feels disjointed and unsatisfying. Banderas, in particular, shines in his role, but even his talents can't elevate a script that fails to provide a clear emotional throughline.
As the film industry continues to grapple with the challenges of creating nuanced, relatable family dramedies, "Up Against It" serves as a cautionary tale. With the likes of "The Royal Tenenbaums" and "Little Miss Sunshine" having successfully navigated this tricky terrain, it's clear that Styler's film had potential, but ultimately falls short. For those interested in exploring more successful takes on the genre, it's worth revisiting these classics, while keeping an eye on upcoming projects that might better balance humor and heart.
