Netflix Docuseries ‘The One About Matthew Perry’ Is a Tragic, Mournful Portrait of Addiction: TV Review

The new Netflix docuseries "The One About Matthew Perry" offers a poignant and introspective look at the late actor's struggles with addiction, providing a candid and often heartbreaking portrait of a life marred by substance abuse. What's striking about this docuseries is the absence of some of Perry's most famous friends and colleagues, including his "Friends" castmates and Hank Azaria, which lends an air of intimacy and vulnerability to the project.

The series' focus on Perry's personal struggles and his own words, drawn from interviews and public appearances, creates a sense of immediacy and authenticity. By centering Perry's own voice and experiences, the docuseries sidesteps the usual celebrity documentary fare of gossip and hearsay, instead delivering a nuanced exploration of addiction and its devastating consequences. This approach will likely resonate with audiences, particularly those familiar with Perry's work and struggles.

As the entertainment industry continues to grapple with issues of mental health and addiction, "The One About Matthew Perry" serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggles faced by many in the public eye. Looking ahead, it's worth watching how the docuseries' impact might spark further conversations about addiction and recovery, as well as whether it might inspire more celebrities to speak openly about their own struggles. The documentary's effectiveness in shedding light on Perry's life and struggles also raises questions about the role of documentaries in telling the stories of complex, multifaceted individuals like Perry.
